WATCH: This 30-Second Movie Clip Sums Up the Entire Presidential Debate

The first 2020 presidential debate was a partisan brawl that unexpectedly united Americans in bipartisan consensus: It was terrible.

The debate: On the stage in Cleveland on Tuesday, President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden repeatedly talked over each other and traded personal insults.

  • Biden at various points told Trump to “shut up” and called him a “racist,” a “clown” and “the worst president America has ever had.”
  • The Republican president suggested his Democratic rival was stupid and later slammed his son, Hunter Biden, for getting discharged from the military after failing a drug test.

While commentators argued over which candidate performed worse, there was general agreement that the debate failed to inform or persuade American voters.

The meme: Many social media users — including on both the right and the left — shared a roughly 30-second clip from the 1995 Adam Sandler comedy classic “Billy Madison” to sum up the 90-minute debate.

Some compared the movie’s gameshow-style host to the real-life debate moderator, Fox News’ Chris Wallace; while others likened the scripted scathing deadpan to one delivered by CNN’s Jake Tapper following the debate.

The Trump-Biden debates are slated to continue despite the poor reviews, with the second installment of the three-part series on Oct. 15 in Miami.

  • C-SPAN’s Steve Scully will moderate, and may God have mercy on his soul.
