A massive explosion captured on video in the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday has stunned the world.
The video: The footage, which was taken by eyewitnesses and shared widely on social media, shows buildings being leveled by the blast and a giant mushroom cloud rising above the city.
The aftermath: The Associated Press reported that the cause of the explosion was still unknown.
- But that didn’t halt at-times wild speculation from social media commenters worldwide.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi rejected unfounded allegations claiming Israeli involvement in the incident.
The explosion may have been caused by a burning container of fireworks, which spread to a nitrate warehouse, according to Beirut-based journalist Abby Sewell, citing a Lebanese Army source.
Hamad Hasan, Lebanon’s health minister, said the damage caused by the blast was extensive and multiple were injured in the explosion.
