Video of Chicago Couple Pulled Out of Car and Shot Sets Internet on Fire

A video showing a man and woman being dragged out of a car and shot in the middle of a busy Chicago roadway horrified Twitter users and sparked a debate on issues of race, violent crime and political hypocrisy.

SO WHAT?

Critics accuse progressive activists of ignoring the reality of violent crime in urban centers to focus on comparatively minor racial and social justice issues.

THE VIDEO

In a graphic video posted to Twitter over the weekend, a man and woman are dragged from a vehicle on a street in Chicago’s Humboldt Park and then shot.

The crime

Chicago police say a 24-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were shot by a group of two to three assailants on Saturday night, CBS Chicago reported.

The man, identified by CBS Chicago as Gyovanni Arzuaga, was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. The female victim is in critical condition.

No suspect is in custody, according to CBS Chicago.

The reaction

Conservative pundits highlighted the disturbing incident as an example of media bias, claiming it would receive little attention in the mainstream press because it didn’t fit a ready-made liberal narrative.

Lori Lightfoot

Other pundits took aim at Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, accusing her of mismanaging the crime epidemic in her city while focusing her efforts on paying lip service to woke orthodoxy.

They highlighted how Lightfoot last week declared racism a “public health crisis” in her city.

Just days later, a rash of weekend violence would see 54 people shot, five fatally, across the Windy City.
