Trump’s Base Is Behind Him Again After Failed Impeachment Trial, Polls Show

Former President Donald Trump’s support among Republican has surged following his acquittal on an impeachment charge.

Then: Trump’s approval rating fell dramatically in the aftermath of a Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol which he was impeached for allegedly inciting.

  • On Jan. 7, just 41% of Republican voters said they wanted Trump to play a “major role” in their party going forward, according to a Morning Consult poll.

Now: In the latest version of the poll, conducted on Feb. 14-15, Trump’s overall approval rating was still low, at 34%.

  • But 59% of Republicans said they supported Trump returning to lead the GOP.
  • That’s an increase of 18 points since the riot, and of 9 points since a Jan. 25 follow-up poll, before the impeachment trial began.

Most Republicans, 53%, also told Morning Consult they would vote to reelect Trump if the 2024 GOP primary were held today.

  • The only other Republican hopeful to crack double-digits was Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence.

Other recent polls have shown a similar trend.

  • Fully 75% of Republicans told Quinnipiac University pollsters on Jan. 15 that they would like to see Trump play a prominent role in the Republican Party.
  • A CBS News poll released last week found that 71% of Republicans view GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach Trump or remove him from office as “disloyal.”

Politico, which partnered on the Morning Consult polls, said the latest results prove “that despite the impeachment managers’ gripping presentation and video laying out Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 rampage, the GOP remains the undisputed party of Trump.”

Back toward the baseline?: During his presidency, Trump’s average approval rating among Republicans was 88%, according to Gallup.
