Trump Speaks Following Acquittal by Senate — Promises MAGA Comeback

Former President Donald Trump spoke out on Saturday following his second impeachment acquittal — thanking his supporters and hinting at a political comeback.

The statement: Trump, who has been quiet since leaving the White House last month, issued a statement dismissing his impeachment as “yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country.”

  • “I also want to convey my gratitude to the millions of decent, hardworking, law-abiding, God-and-Country loving citizens who have bravely supported these important principles in these very difficult and challenging times,” he said.

The former president went on to promise that his weeks of relative silence are coming to an end.

  • “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun,” said Trump, who is living at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
  • “In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it!”

The trial: Trump’s acquittal on Saturday on an impeachment charge of “incitement to insurrection” came in a largely party line vote.

  • Seven Republican senators joined all the Democrats in voting to convict Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.
  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, after voting to acquit on procedural grounds, denounced Trump and looked ahead to a post-Trump GOP.

Unfortunately for McConnell and his Republican allies in Washington, Trump remains popular with Republican voters.

  • A CBS News poll released last week found that 71% of Republicans views GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach Trump or remove him from office as “disloyal.”

What’s next: Trump is said to be preparing to give a spate of interviews, and his aides have been making plans for a new online presence in light of his permanent ban from Twitter.

  • Having threatened to start his own political party, Trump has been holding meetings about helping Republican try to take control of the House and Senate in the 2022 midterms elections, The Associated Press reported.
  • At the same time, according to The AP, Trump “remains fixated on exacting revenge on Republicans who supported his impeachment or resisted his efforts to overturn the results of the November election won by Democrat Joe Biden.”
