President Donald Trump on Monday excoriated Rep. Ilhan Omar, a first-term Minnesota Democrat, calling her a “horrible woman who hates our country.”
The video: Trump went after a number of his Democratic opponents during a rally at Mankato Regional Airport in Minnesota, Omar’s home state.
After criticizing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, California Democrat Sen. Kamala Harris, Trump singled out Omar as a standard-bearer for the Democratic Party’s “radical left.”
- “Crazy”: “This woman is crazy. She’s a horrible woman who hates our country,” the president said.
- Just asking questions: “No, seriously, how does a woman who hates our country, who says nothing but bad things about our country and Israel and other of our allies? How does this woman win? Where are the people that would vote for her?”
- Where’s Joe? “Omar called the Minneapolis police a cancer and said they were rotten to the root, but Joe Biden did not condemn the comments, he didn’t want to talk about it,” Trump said.
Omar, who won her Democratic primary last week, reportedly said at a June racial justice protest in Minneapolis that city’s police department must be dismantled because it has “a cancer” and is “rotten to the root.”
A history of conflict: Trump has often questioned Omar’s loyalty to the United States, citing her left-wing views and her alleged trivialization of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
- At an October 2019 rally in Minneapolis, Trump called Omar an “America-hating socialist” who “minimized the Sept. 11 attack on our homeland.”
- Omar, a Muslim immigrant from Somalia, has also attacked the president in personal terms and, along with her allies, accused him of racist and sexist rhetoric that puts her “life at risk.”
Trump faced similar backlash last week for calling Harris, a black woman, “nasty.”
Undeterred by the critics, Trump and his reelection campaign have continued to argue that a Biden presidency would empower Omar and her ilk to enact a extreme left-wing policies.
At a rally in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday, Trump called the Democratic agenda “radical and beyond socialism.”
- He said Biden’s immigration platform is “a step-by-step recipe for abolishing America’s borders.”
- “Biden’s plan is the most radical, extreme, reckless, dangerous and deadly immigration plan ever put forward by a major party candidate,” Trump went on. “It must be defeated, and it will be defeated on November 3.”
