Transgender former Olympian and reality star Caitlyn Jenner is considering running for governor of California as a Republican, according to a report from Axios.
The facts: Three sources familiar with the matter say Jenner, a former Donald Trump supporter, is receiving the assistance of political operative Caroline Wren, who has worked on Trump’s fundraising campaigns in the past.
- Jenner, who won the 1976 Olympic male decathlon and publicly transitioned in 2015, and Wren both declined to comment to Axios.
- The former “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star would be attempting to follow in the footsteps of former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenneger, who won the state as a Republican after Democratic Gov. Gray Davis was recalled in 2003.
The recall: Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing a recall backed by Republicans who perceive his handling of the coronavirus pandemic as draconian and inconsistent.
- Newsom, meanwhile, has raised the eyebrows of political observers of all stripes by saying the recall, which enjoys substantial support from his state’s residents and is likely to succeed, was fomented by conspiracy theorists.
