A Massachusetts teenager exposed her family as part of the crowd protesting at the Capitol.
Busted: Helena Duke, 18, tweeted footage from last Wednesday’s Capitol demonstration showing a woman being punched in the face.
“hi mom remember the time you told me I shouldn’t go to BLM protests bc they could get violent…this you?” she wrote.
- She added a tweet with a picture of her mother, Therese Duke, beside a still from the video.
- “for those that don’t believe it’s my mother….” she said in a caption to the video.
- “Her actions were appalling and I did not think she could possibly stoop this low,” Duke told Newsweek. “I do find her participation in the insurrection extremely hypocritical as she has kicked me out of the house for attending BLM protests.”
In another tweet, Duke shared three different photos and identified her mother, aunt and uncle as attendees at last week’s demonstrations.
Why’d she do it: Helena Duke told the New York Post, she “was kind of uneasy about outing her mother at first.
- “[B]ut I think it was definitely so hypocritical of her to end up kicking me out of the house for going to peaceful protests because she assumed they’d be violent, and then end up going to this, which was obviously a very violent attack on the Capitol — and end up harassing a cop,” she said.
The aftermath: Therese Duke lost her job as a caregiver at UMass Memorial Medical Center after being exposed by her daughter, Patch reported.
- Helena, who aspires to be a lawyer, is now running a GoFundMe to pay for college, since she claims to be receiving “very little financial support.”
Consequences: The F.B.I. is expecting to make “hundreds” of arrests following the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump.
- On Wednesday, the House of Representatives will debate and vote on an article of impeachment against Trump for “incitement of insurrection.”
