Republican House Leader Says Nobody Is Questioning Legitimacy of Biden’s Election

R

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Wednesday that nobody is “questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election.”

The moment: McCarthy, a Republican from California, made the claim to reporters after meeting with President Joe Biden and other congressional leaders at the White House to discuss infrastructure spending.

  • “I don’t think anybody is questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. That is all over with,” McCarthy said. “We’re sitting here with the president today.”

The reality: Former President Donald Trump, numerous Republican lawmakers and most Republican voters have continued to question the legitimacy of the presidential election.

  • Hours before McCarthy made his comments, he joined other House Republicans in voting to oust Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming from her leadership position for repeatedly repudiating Trump’s unproven claims that the election was stolen from him.
