QUOTE OF THE DAY: Swimming Is Racist

Q

Gisele Fetterman, the wife of Pennsylvania’s Democratic senate candidate, claimed in an interview released Thursday that “historically, swimming in America is very racist.”

THE QUOTE

Speaking to Jill Wine-Banks and Victor Shi on the “iGen Politics” podcast, Fetterman addressed why she and Lieutenant Gov. John Fetterman had not moved into the state-owned Harrisburg mansion for Pennsylvania’s Second Family.

“While we did not want the mansion, that mansion came with a pool I wanted,” she said. “And the dream was to make this a public pool and turn it into the people’s pool and ensure that young people across Pennsylvania could learn how to swim and water safety and kind of work to right some of the wrongs.”

  • “Historically, swimming in America is very racist, and usually when you look at drowning statistics, it usually affects children of color, because of lack of access,” she explained.
  • The Fettermans instead lived in a converted loft in Braddock, acquired from the lieutenant governor’s sister for $1.
