Q

Dave Chappelle delivered a verbal tongue-lashing to high school students from his alma mater Duke Ellington School of the Arts, after they accused him of bigotry.

“Your comedy kills,” one of the students said Tuesday at the school’s auditorium, where Chappelle gave an impromptu address on the outrage stirred up by “The Closer,” his latest Netflix special.

Eight students came forward during the Q&A portion of the event to express their views on the controversy, which largely stems from the comedian’s jokes about transgender people, Politico Playbook reported.

  • “I’m 16 and I think you’re childish, you handled it like a child,” one student said, after calling Chappelle a “bigot.”
  • “My friend, with all due respect, I don’t believe you could make one of the decisions I have to make on a given day,” the comedian replied.
  • Chappelle answered another confrontational question by saying: “I’m better than every instrumentalist, artist, no matter what art you do in this school, right now, I’m better than all of you. I’m sure that will change. I’m sure you’ll be household names soon.”

He also had a blunt response to the student who had accused him of killing people with his comedy.

  • “N*ggas are killed every day,” he said, before quipping, “The media’s not here, right?”
