Former ESPN commentator Keith Olbermann outraged social media users by using a story about a school shooting victim to score political points against Donald Trump and his supporters.
THE QUOTE
“This kid died to stop a school shooter whose mother echoed the Trumpist Fascism of @stoolpresidente and @barstoolsports,” Olbermann tweeted in response to a Barstool Sports story about football player Tate Myre, 16, who died Tuesday while attempting to disarm 15-year-old shooter Ethan Crumbley at Oxford High School in Oxford, Michigan.
Crumbley’s mother once wrote a letter praising Trump and the former president’s stance on gun rights, the Daily Beast reported.
- But critics saw Olbermann’s comments as a sign the former sportscaster was obsessed with Trump.
- “I’ll never miss anything as much as Keith misses Trump,” tweeted conservative commentator Jim Treacher.
THE REAL STORY
Fellow Oxford High School students said Myre, a running back on the school’s football team, rushed Crumbley in an attempt to take away his firearm.
- Myre was shot repeatedly and died later from his injuries.
- A petition was created hours after the shooting calling for Oxford to rename the school’s sports stadium in Myre’s name.
