NOT THE ONION: German Organization Will Only Euthanize You If You’re Vaccinated

A German-Swiss euthanasia organization announced Friday it would be offering its services only to vaccinated and convalescent individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED

“Euthanasia and the preparatory examination of the voluntary responsibility of our members willing to die require human closeness. Human closeness, however, is a prerequisite and breeding ground for coronavirus transmission,” Verein Sterbehilfe said in a statement posted to its website.

The group, founded in Oststeinbek, Germany in 2009, has “advised over 2000 members in difficult phases of life and accompanied over 300 members during suicide,” according to its website.

  • Verein Sterbehilfe said in its statement that as of Friday the “2G rule applies in our association, supplemented by situation-related measures, such as quick tests before encounters in closed rooms.”
  • The “2G rule” refers to a system adopted by Germany and other European nations that restricts the activities of individuals who are not vaccinated against coronavirus or recovered from the disease.
  • The organization said it had taken the step as a precautionary measure to protect members, employees and doctors.
