First Lady Jill Biden Completely Butchers Spanish Phrase in ‘Hispandering’ Fail

First lady Jill Biden butchered a Spanish labor slogan while addressing farmworkers during an event in California on Wednesday, earning mockery from conservative Twitter.

The moment: Biden gave the eight-minute speech at the historic Delano headquarters of the United Farm Workers of America on the birthday of Cesar Chavez, the labor organizer who formed the country’s first successful farmworkers’ union.

  • She attempted to conclude her remarks by leading a rousing chant of the farmworker union’s motto “Sí, se puede,” or “Yes, we can.”
  • But, after having said the phrase correctly twice before in the speech, she had a Biden moment.

The reaction: Steve Cortes, a former Trump campaign adviser, tweeted that he was binge-watching Biden’s parody-level “#Hispandering” failure.

Benny Johnson of Turning Point USA likened the first lady to the comically insensitive TV matriarch from “Arrested Development.”

The Comfortably Smug Twitter account recalled Biden’s insistence on referring to herself as “Dr.” despite not being a medical doctor and pined for the days of first lady Melania Trump.

Meanwhile, the Daily Caller’s Greg Price guessed how the media would have reacted if Trump, instead of Biden, had spoken in front of the United Farm Workers of America’s eagle-emblazoned flag.

The politics: Biden’s appearance in California, alongside Gov. Gavin Newsom and other local leaders, underlined her husband’s progressive positions on two hot-button issues:

  • Unions: She repeatedly invoked Chavez’s legacy and praised farmworkers for working throughout the pandemic, which the United Farm Workers of America has argued entitles them to priority vaccination.
  • Immigration: She said President Joe Biden supports the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, a bill that would offer a path to citizenship for seasonal farmworkers, many of whom are illegal immigrants.
