Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s unconventional attire while presiding over the Senate on Tuesday drew attention in the chamber and beyond.
The moment: Sinema, a Democrat from Arizona, wore a pink sweater that read that read “DANGEROUS CREATURE” in red letters.
In footage from the chamber, Sen. Mitt Romney, a Republican from Utah, can be seen informing Sinema, “You’re breaking the internet.”
- “Good!” replied Sinema in an exchange that circulated widely online.
Yas queen?: Sinema — who in 2018 became the first openly bisexual senator and the first woman to represent Arizona in the body — has repeatedly stretched Congress’ sartorial norms.
- She has on previous occasions been both cheered and scorned for wearing colorful wigs, a purple dress and thigh-high boots on the job.
But Sinema is commanding more attention than ever in this Congress, where as a moderate Democrat in a narrowly divided Senate, she holds sway over President Joe Biden’s agenda.
