A new CIA recruiting video has been widely panned for allegedly signaling American weakness to the rest of the world.
The video: The two-minute ad, posted on Twitter last Wednesday, features a 36-year-old CIA officer who refuses “to internalize misguided patriarchal ideas of what a woman can or should be.”
- The agent also boasts about being an empowered “intersectional” Latina mother and a “cisgender millennial who’s been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder.”
- “I am unapologetically me. I want you to be unapologetically you, whoever you are,” she says. “Know your worth, command your space.”
First released on the CIA’s YouTube channel on March 21, the video is part of a series called Humans of CIA.
The reaction: Conservative commentators on Twitter said the world is laughing at the United States’ official embrace of social justice ideology.
Some on the right went as far as to suggest the woke left is destroying the CIA and the rest of America from within.
There was disagreement about whether or not the CIA is weakening the United States on purpose.
Glenn Greenwald, a left-leaning journalist, said the CIA and other elite U.S. institutions have long exploited “woke ideology” to bolster their power.
A number of other progressives agreed, and took issue with having their ideas coopted.
More: Fox News host Tucker Carlson has repeatedly exchanged fire with the Pentagon, alleging that the U.S. national security apparatus has been corrupted by elite interests.
- “While China’s military becomes more masculine … our military needs to become, as Joe Biden says, more feminine,” Carlson said in a March segment about the Biden administration’s feminist military reforms.
- “It’s out of control and the Pentagon’s going along with this. Again, this is a mockery of the US military and its core mission, which is winning wars.”
